MOMAR (mind over mountain adventure race)
The MOMAR is a great adventure race that occurs every year in Cumberland. It’s a fantastic host town with lots of community spirit, a huge supply of volunteers and lots of amazing mountain biking. Last year, I trained with a good friend and we completed the MOMAR together after a grueling 6 hours of kayaking, trail running, map reading, hiking bikes up mountains and going down some technical mountain bike trails, this year was very similar. My husband and I signed up together, along with a couple of good friends from the island. In total their were 5 Gabriola residents that participated in the event, the race had a total of 500 participants, so I thought we had good representation. It’s a great way to see another area, spend the day outdoors, and a good way to motivate your self to train. Is there anything I would do differently, absolutely, mountain bike skills are key on this course and that was my area of weakness, so it looks like a little more time on two wheels in the trails on Gabriola this upcoming year. It’s a great challenge that requires training and sells out quickly, so if you’re thinking of doing it, make sure you sign in the beginning of the new year.
