Arbutus Building Supplies opened in 1986 and has been owned and operated by the Smith family ever since. We are centrally located in “downtown” Gabriola.

Arbutus has friendly, helpful staff with many years experience in the building trade. They are always willing to give knowledgeable advice or recommend contractors for any projects you have planned. There is over 2500 sq ft of interior retail space, 6000 sqft of warehouse and 2 acres of yard space.

We run several delivery trucks, from 1-ton flat beds to a 5-ton crane.  Not only do we supply Gabriola, but we work with barge companies to supply Mudge, Decourcy, Valdes and Ruxton as well as other surrounding Gulf Islands.  We provide everything from foundation to roof for new homes, renovations and commercial buildings, working with local architects and attending home shows to find the latest in building trends.

Arbutus has always been independently owned but has recently become part of a larger buying group, by teaming up with IRLY/Timbermart. This allows us to offer competitive pricing and helps us to expand and carry new products.  We also continue to deal with many other local suppliers. To ensure we are well stocked and special orders arrive quickly, products arrive to us from Vancouver Island and the Mainland on a daily basis.
